Fraction Calculator

Work with fractions the way you learned in school, without the arithmetic slips. Enter proper fractions, improper fractions, mixed numbers like 2 1/3, whole numbers or decimals. The answer comes back simplified, as a mixed number and as a decimal.

3/4 + 2/317/12
Mixed number
1 5/12
Decimal
1.4166666667
Step-by-step working
  1. Common denominator: LCM(4, 3) = 12
  2. Rewrite: 3/4 = 9/12, 2/3 = 8/12
  3. Add the numerators: 9 + 8 = 17, giving 17/12
  4. Simplify by the greatest common divisor: 17/12

How to use the Fraction Calculator

  1. Type the first fraction. Mixed numbers use a space: 2 1/3.
  2. Choose the operation.
  3. Type the second fraction and press Calculate.

Formula

  • a/b + c/d = (a·d + c·b) / (b·d), then simplify. This tool uses the lowest common denominator to keep numbers small.
  • a/b × c/d = (a·c) / (b·d)
  • a/b ÷ c/d = (a·d) / (b·c)

To simplify, divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor.

Examples

  • 3/4 + 2/3: LCD 12 → 9/12 + 8/12 = 17/12 = 1 5/12.
  • 1 1/2 × 2/3: 3/2 × 2/3 = 6/6 = 1.
  • 5/6 ÷ 1/3: 5/6 × 3/1 = 15/6 = 5/2 = 2 1/2.
